The Hammers news outlet reported on 17 July that the club feel £23million is too steep for Walker-Peters and have a similar feeling with the £35million quoted for Duran, with Tim Steidten’s top priority currently being bringing in a new striker.
They have also been linked with Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka but do not want to match his £90,000 per week wages.
Via X, the news outlet wrote: “After the sale of Flynn Downes to Southampton Tim Steidten will now look for a new right back alongside the top priority to find a striker.
“West Ham hold an interest in Kyle Walker-Peters but believe Southampton valuation of around £23m is too high considering he is in the last year of his contract. There is also interest in Aaron Wan-Bissaka but his £90,000 per week wages are thought to be a barrier.
“On the striker front West Ham retain an interest in John Durán but the 20 year Colombian striker who was an unused substitute in Monday’s Copa America Final is seen as overvalued by Aston Villa at £35m.”
West Ham must be careful with their transfer approach
The club’s valuation concerns are valid at this stage of the transfer window.
Overpaying for players can have long-term financial implications, especially when considering the wages and potential resale value.
By holding firm on their valuation of Walker-Peters and Duran, the Hammers are demonstrating financial prudence and a commitment to sustainable spending.
However, as the window progresses, the club’s stance may need to evolve.
If a month passes and the valuations for these players do not decrease, the London outfit might find themselves in a challenging position.
With time running out, they may need to compromise on their valuation to secure the necessary reinforcements, particularly a striker, which is a top priority.
This compromise would require a careful assessment of the players’ potential impact on the team and the club’s long-term financial health.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers may vary their training routines as they have made an approach to sign a £70m-rated player this summer.
