The last Memphis Grizzlies game left a bad taste in the players and coaches mouths. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins called out the team’s “atrocious” defensive effort while the Chicago Bulls came back from down 20 points to win in FedEx Forum.
Memphis practiced the following day and focused on defense. That’s where the Grizzlies believe their biggest struggles have come so far this season.
The Grizzlies’ first chance at cleaning up those issues will come on Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets.
This is one of those games where the Grizzlies have built-in advantages. Brooklyn is traveling to Memphis on the second leg of a back to back after playing the Denver Nuggets at home on Tuesday. That game also went into overtime.
The Grizzlies practiced Tuesday, but they shouldn’t be as tired as Brooklyn could be. Four Nets starters played at least 37 minutes on Tuesday. No Grizzlies player has reached that total in a game this season.
Two key Grizzlies starters are on the injury report. Zach Edey (right calf soreness) and Ja Morant (right thigh soreness) are both listed as questionable. Edey has played in every game and Morant has only missed one. Reserve wing John Konchar is also questionable to play.
Wednesday will be the first time former Grizzlies wing Ziaire Williams will play against his old team. Williams spent three seasons in Memphis before being traded to the Nets.
Williams is off to a strong start in Brooklyn. He finished Tuesday’s game with 18 points and four assists off the bench while making four of his five 3-point attempts.
