Gregg Popovich has released a statement for the first time since suffering a stroke in early November. The legendary head coach thanked the San Antonio Spurs organization, along with the fans for their unwavering support during this very difficult time. He noted that he is currently working on his recovery, and is excited to make his return to the bench, although he didn’t provide a timeline for his return.
“This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me. As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has truly been overwhelming in the best possible way.”
“While I wish I could get back to every single one of you, for now, let me just say that my family and I are forever grateful. We’re thankful for our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization, and our family and friends.”
Popovich suffered a stroke on November 2nd, which kept him off the sidelines for the Spurs. In his absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson took over as the acting head coach. Johnson, who has been with the Spurs and under Pop’s learning tree for five years now, was trusted to lead the team in Pop’s absence.
Johnson has done well in his time in charge, leading the Spurs to an 11-10 record as head coach. Considering the Spurs are still a middling team that will compete for a play-in spot at best, he has done about as well as he could have with the players he has.
He has also taken from Popovich in holding players accountable, recently calling out Victor Wembanyama for his poor fundamental play during games.
While Johnson has done well, everyone in the NBA will be waiting with bated breath to see the legendary head coach of the Spurs make his return.
We here at Fadeaway World would like to wish Gregg Popovich and his family the very best and hope he has a speedy and successful recovery.
