The NBA Draft is always one of the more interesting events in the sporting year and there aren’t even any games to be played. The most competitive aspect of Draft Night is generally who has the most interesting tailor.
Well that’s not entirely true. The teams scheme against each other and inflate some players while deflating the ones they are really after to push them down the draft order.
And then there’s the Green Room. People definitely compete to get a seat in the Green Room. And now, Duke’s Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski are going to be there – which means they need to talk to some serious tailors. That competition really is pretty intense.
Of course those invitations mean that the NBA powers that be think they’re more likely to go closer to the lottery than not. Duke fans hope so and they’re not likely to drop too far.
It does happen though. One of the saddest things ever in the draft was watching Florida’s Dwayne Schintzius sit there until the 24th pick, agonizing as others went before him. He was an easy guy to dislike – very easy, really – but it was impossible not to feel for him in that moment. Seeing somebody crushed like that, even someone you don’t much like, is just awful.
