Sunderland continued their glorious start to their Championship season on Saturday as they overcame Burnley 1-0.
Romaine Mundle netted the only goal of the game at the Stadium of Light as the club picked up their third win in as many games.
Plenty of players shone in the fixture including Patrick Roberts whose performance was hailed as a ‘masterclass’.
It now means Regis Le Bris’ side sit top of the Championship with dreams of promotion to the Premier League being reignited.
The weekend’s result also means that Sunderland has achieved one feat for the first time in 99 years.
Sunderland witnessing the best opening to a campaign for 99 years
While Le Bris’ appointment came with plenty of scepticism, the manager has got Sunderland playing some brilliant football in the opening games.
The Black Cats blew away Burnley who were on fire before the tie and are widely considered to be one of the promotion favourites.
Now, after three wins from their first three games, the BBC has confirmed that this is Sunderland’s best start to a league campaign since the 1925/26 season.
The feat shows how far Le Bris has taken the side in such a short period of time despite the challenges he has faced.
There is also a good chance that Sunderland can extend this run further as their next two fixtures are away to Portsmouth and Plymouth, two sides without a league victory thus far.
Regis Le Bris could not have dreamed of a better start at Sunderland
Going into the Burnley tie, many fans would have been forgiven if they thought a loss was on the cards.
The visitors had already netted nine times in their first two games and looked certain to keep this trend going.
Yet, not only did Sunderland come away with the victory, the hosts were the better team and could have been comfortably ahead at half-time.
After the dismantling of yet another team, the appointment of Le Bris is looking more incredible as each day passes.
While there is a long way to go this season, dreams of Premier League football are well and truly back.
