The Los Angeles Lakers were beginning to look like a potential contender making a run at the Celtics after acquiring Luka Doncic and Mark Williams at the trade deadline. However, the Lakers trade for the 7-foot Hornets center was rescinded on Saturday. The Lakers announced that the deal was rescinded since the Hornets ‘failed to satisfy a condition of the trade. Shams Charania of ESPN.com reports that Williams failed his physical with the Lakers due to multiple physical issues, leading to the Lakers voiding the deal.
The Lakers originally agreed to send Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2031 first round pick and a 2030 first round pick swap in exchange for Williams on Wednesday. The trade became official on Thursday pending physicals.
Williams has dealt with back issues throughout his career in Charlotte which has limited him to 42 games over the past year and a half with the Hornets. He is averaging 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds in 23 games this season and was widely viewed as a key replacement for the Lakers following the team’s decision to send out Anthony Davis in the blockbuster deal for Luka Doncic.
There will be no chance to amend the deal with the trade deadline in the rear view mirror now, which will force the Lakers to look elsewhere for big man help after sending Davis away. The Lakers acquired Maxi Kleber as part of the Doncic deal but he’s expected to miss another two months due to injuries. Los Angeles still has Jaxson Hayes, Jarred Vanderbilt and Christian Wood on the roster to help man the middle for now, however, the Lakers front office will likely need to look to the buyout market now to improve the position. Mo Bamba, Daniel Theis and PJ Tucker are currently the best big men available on the buyout market after the trade deadline.
The Celtics will face off against the Lakers in Boston on March 8th.
