The motocross world was deeply saddened by the loss of Marty Smith, a pioneering figure who tragically passed away on April 27, 2020, at the age of 63. He and his wife, Nancy, were killed in a dune buggy accident at the Imperial Sand Dunes in Southern California .

Born in San Diego, California, Smith began his professional racing career at just 17 years old. He quickly rose to prominence in the 1970s, securing three AMA National Motocross Championships: the 125cc titles in 1974 and 1975, and the 500cc title in 1977 . Riding for Honda, Smith became a household name, known for his smooth, calculated riding style and his surfer-like appearance, which endeared him to fans and earned him the title of motocross’s first teen idol .
After retiring from professional racing in 1981, Smith remained active in the sport, founding the Marty Smith Motocross Clinic and co-winning the 1991 Baja 1000. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2000, solidifying his legacy as one of the sport’s greats .
