Joe Gibbs Racing confirmed to Sports Illustrated that Ty Gibbs will be the owner the No. 54 JGR car during the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series season. Ty Gibbs hinted at the news in an Instagram Story earlier in the day.
The news comes after JGR announced that Taylor Gray will drive the No. 54 Toyota full-time in the XFINITY Series next season. Gray will be paired with crew chief Tyler Allen who has led his team to seven wins and the regular season owner’s championship.
“I am very thankful for this opportunity,” Gray said, per NASCAR.com. “I feel like I have learned a lot in the races I have ran this year, and we can build on that next season. Being able to work with Tyler (Allen, crew chief) and these guys for a few races has been a great head start on next season and getting that chemistry going, so I’m really excited about what we can do running together full-time.”
Gibbs, 22, is the grandson of JGR owner and legendary NFL head coach Joe Gibbs. In 79 Cup Series races, Ty Gibbs has earned 22 top-10 finishes but has yet to earn a victory. He has competed in 64 Xfinity Series races and has earned 12 wins and 41 top-10 finishes. In 2022, Gibbs won the Xfinity Series title, winning seven races that season.
In the Cup Series this season, Gibbs qualified for the playoffs. However, the 2023 Cup Series Rookie of the Year winner was eliminated after the Round of 16 ended.
Before the playoffs began, Gibbs talked about the difference between competing in the Xfinity Series and Cup Series. “I think – you could say this is all the top sports and motorsports in the world – I think with football, talking to some of my friends that made the jump from college to pro – it is just a huge jump, and everyone is so much better,” he said. “It is a whole different environment. It is all different. It is all part of going from semi-pro to pro – you have to make that jump and that is hard.”
