Hayden Young believes a healthy and available playing list over the summer has dialled up the training track intensity to a new level.
With just two months remaining before Fremantle’s season-opener against Geelong on Saturday 15 March, it’s been a highly contested pre-season for Young and his teammates.
“The intensity is through the roof. It’s what we want, we want the intensity to be up,” Young said.
“We have had a really fit list through the whole pre-season, so everyone is just going really hard at the moment which is great.
“Bodies are flying around and it’s good because we know round one will be like that – we want to train like we play. It’s a good start.”
A friendly fire collision between Luke Ryan and Jye Amiss in a marking contest on Monday morning raised the question of whether players second-guess going back with the flight throughout the pre-season period.
“You do think about it a little bit and if there is an opportunity to protect your teammate you take it – but sometimes in footy you can’t help these things,” Young said.
Halfway through his sixth pre-season at the top level, Young is coming off the back of signing a significant contract extension through until the end of 2033.
Officially the longest-contracted player in the AFL, Young says he is eager to ‘build a legacy’ over his career at Fremantle.
“The prospect of being a Freo player for life was really appealing to me and when the opportunity was presented, I didn’t really think twice about it,” Young said.
“Going to another club and chasing (success) you wouldn’t get the same satisfaction of sharing that experience with the people I’ve been with for the last five years.
“The attraction for me was to be one of the first to hold up the cup with my teammates, so I’m thrilled to sign for that long and hopefully, we can have some success.”
