As the Notre Dame football team prepares for the Sugar Bowl against Georgia, the Bulldogs coach talked to the media about what he’s seen from the Fighting Irish. As it turns out, he sees a physical matchup with Marcus Freeman. In fact, Smart sees the team as so physical, he thought he was giving them a complement when he said that he believes the Irish “look like an SEC team.”
However, Smart doesn’t seem to realize that the SEC is in the middle of what can only be described as backlash against the conference. There’s been an awful lot of complaining going on from SEC members for one reason or another.
Lane Kiffin whined about the SEC championship game. Alabama complained about not making the playoffs. And Notre Dame football fans aren’t all that excited about anyone from that conference acting as though someone wants to be compared to those schools.
Notre Dame football fans revolt against SEC comparisons
“Kirby Smart says Notre Dame is built ‘like an SEC team’ and notes the physicality on the line of scrimmage and how aggressive the linebackers play,” Pete Sampson wrote on Twitter. Plenty of Irish fans made it clear they didn’t want any part of that.
“We are built like Notre Dame,” one fan wrote. “Kirby can keep that horses—. Georgia Tech was robbed and we both played that team. We may or may not win this game, but don’t pretend the SEC is still the standard. Parity in college football is here and growing. Just watch the games.”
“SEC is so arrogant,” another wrote. “Oh thanks for saying you our model.”
“Don’t insult the Irish like that,” a third posted. “SEC has proven they only have bias media as a crutch.”
It’s clear that Notre Dame football team’s fans are fired up. Here’s hoping the Irish can win on Wednesday night and make Smart eat those words.
