The Ohio State football team is going to have a new quarterback next season. After having Will Howard lead them to a national championship, they will now turn to a quarterback who has no starting experience. No matter who the Buckeyes tap as the starter, they won’t have three years of starting experience like Howard did.
The last time the Ohio State Buckeyes had a starting quarterback who didn’t have previous starting experience was Kyle McCord in 2023. That obviously didn’t end very well because the Buckeyes had Howard leading the team last season while McCord transferred to Syracuse.
This season, the Buckeyes need to have a better option at quarterback. What they need is to have Ryan Day be the quarterback whisperer that he used to be. He needs to be able to develop quarterbacks like he used to do. Justin Fields, C.J. Stroud, and Dwayne Haskins were all developed by Day.
The Ohio State football team needs Ryan Day to develop QBs again
Day once was considered one of the top quarterback developers in the country. He was able to make both Haskins and Fields Heisman Trophy finalists. The Buckeyes will either have Julian Sayin, Tavien St. Clair, or Lincoln Kienholz start. Day needs to coach up whoever wins the starting job.
This Spring could give Day the reputation of being able to develop any quarterback back on his resume. Ohio State will have a lot of new starters on the team next season, so great play from the quarterback position would certainly help them be a better team.
Sayin is the favorite to win the job right now, but that doesn’t mean that he will. He has been on the roster for a year, although a new offensive coordinator might change things. Brian Hartline might try to implement different stuff than Chip Kelly had, which might give St. Clair a chance.
Kienholz just doesn’t have the raw talent that Sayin or St. Clair does, so he’s the underdog. That will be one of the many battles we’ll be watching in the Spring. Whoever the starter is, Day will need to make sure they’re ready.
