Manchester United have lost Anthony Martial this summer. The Frenchman will be leaving for free after a nine-year stint at Old Trafford. His position in the squad has to be replaced with genuine quality.
Rasmus Hojlund was practically leading the line single-handedly last term. The Dane is still so young and he could certainly do with the extra help. Hence, a new forward of some description feels like a high priority for the Red Devils.
No doubt as we gear up towards the official opening of the summer window in a couple of weeks, more and more names will start appearing on the back pages. Today, Manchester World believe Evan Ferguson is still a Reds target.
All had gone quiet on that front after the Irishman suffered a forgetful end to the campaign. He’d find himself out of the team, then suffered a season-ending ankle injury back in April.
In an article detailing transfer targets for the Reds, Ferguson’s name is given a mention. United still hold a ‘long-term interest’ in signing the 19-year-old, according to journalist Rich Fay.
Ferguson burst onto the scene in the 2022/23 campaign with some stunning performances at striker, showing a real maturity, skill and class. With younger players, they’re always going to suffer with inconsistency. It feels like that’s what has happened to the teenager recently.
There can be no doubt that Ferguson would further improve playing with a better quality of player around him. While he is still young, meaning there is even more room for growth.
A combination of Hojlund and Ferguson would certainly bode well for the future, though at some point, either player would have to become the main man, no doubt leaving the other frustrated at a lack of minutes. I would imagine this situation could only work for a couple of seasons at the absolute maximum.
There’s also the fact that Ferguson would not come cheaply even despite his down year. He’d cost United a large chunk of their summer transfer budget, which has to be concerning for the Reds. Particularly when they have many holes to fill.
