The San Antonio Spurs have the No. 4 and No. 8 overall picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, while both Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham could be targets for the ultra-young San Antonio roster.
The Spurs were awarded the top overall pick in last year’s draft and took generational talent Victor Wembanyama. Averaging 21.4 points and a league-high 3.6 blocks per game, Wemby had a terrific rookie season.
Now, he’s starting to draw the eyes of top prospects, one of which was Dillingham. Should he be drafted by the Spurs, Dillingham knows his role — get Wemby the ball.
“While some around the league don’t view Dillingham as a ‘Spursy’ type of pick based on their drafting track record, he has been openly campaigning to be picked by San Antonio. There’d be no questions about how he’d view the team hierarchy if the Spurs pair him with Wembanyama. At the NBA Draft combine in Chicago, Dillingham said, ‘He could be one of the best players ever. If I’m playing with Wemby, it’s obvious — I am coming in to give Wemby the ball.’” Jonathan Givony of ESPN wrote.
The NBA Draft Insider clearly has heard reports that Dillingham would like to be taken, more than likely at No. 8.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely there will be a reunion with the Spurs between the former Kentucky Wildcats, as it seems like Sheppard is set to go within the top-three selections, especially given he was recently named the best shooter in the draft.
Dillingham has the jump in his step to be able to score with ease at the highest level, and on a team with a strong go-to point guard, he could be a good selection for the Spurs with their second first-round pick.
