The cogs are fully in motion for Southampton’s ongoing pursuit for several targets.
Within the last couple weeks, the Saints have made several shrewd signings, including both Cameron Archer and Lesley Ugochukwu from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively.
The summer has seen Russell Martin look to prioritise Premier League experience, which is embodied in the return of Adam Lallana to the club at the age of 36, as well as the signings of Ben Brereton Diaz and Charlie Taylor.
Additions have been made all across the side, however one position that remains somewhat vacant at this moment is in-between the sticks.
As a result, Southampton have targeted several shot-stoppers, including Dutch goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, however an alternative target remains one of Martin’s priorities, and the Saints may potentially hold the ace card in the pursuit of a wanted man as they battle Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Southampton have the upper-hand in pursuit of Aaron Ramsdale
Both Southampton and Wolves are reportedly targeting a deal to sign England international Aaron Ramsdale, who appears to have fell out of favour with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
However, Southampton could find themselves leading the race to sign the casted-out goalkeeper as a result of his desires for first-team football, and with Wolves having Jose Sa in their squad, it would be far from guaranteed that Ramsdale would walk into the team.
On the other hand, he will likely be called straight into action at Southampton, especially after what was a damning performance from Alex McCarthy against Newcastle United in the season opener.
Aaron Ramsdale could be the difference between survival and relegation
There have been several questions asked as a result of Southampton’s lacking goalkeeper options and the ability of current shot-stoppers at the club, but if this works in Southampton’s favour with the pursuit of Ramsdale, it could potentially define the season.
The Saints have arguably already lost out on a point after McCarthy’s mistake against a 10-man Newcastle United, and any further lost points can easily sway the likelihood of survival away from Southampton.
However, Ramsdale is a proven Premier League quality goalkeeper, and has been so for Arsenal most recently, despite being recently dropped for David Raya.
Ramsdale will be keen to prove his qualities once again, as he has done so many times in the past, and for a deal which could be a loan with an option to buy, there is very little risk in Southampton striking a deal to sign the England international.
