Southampton are in advanced talks to sign Swansea City centre-half Nathan Wood, we understand.
The England youth international was highly sought-after last season, with former Swans boss Russell Martin, now in charge of Southampton, keen on signing him after leaving Wales for the south coast.
However, that move did not transpire and Wood spent another season with the Swans, during which he played 26 Championship games in a campaign which was hampered by a mid-season injury.
However the 22-year-old undoubtedly remains one of Swansea’s biggest assets and WalesOnline understands Saints boss Martin has sought to sign him once again after achieving promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last term.
Talks have reached an advanced stage and a medical has been booked in with Saints for the centre-back.
Swansea signed Wood for around £400,000 from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022. And last summer Swansea are understood to have rejected two offers from Martin, the man who signed him at Swansea, which were worth around £10m. The fee this time around is unknown as yet.
Before the final game of the season, Swans boss Luke Williams did not rule out the possibility of Wood, who has a contract until next summer after the Swans triggered a one-year option, leaving the club in this window.
“There’s an obvious conclusion to be drawn there, that this might be the correct moment [to sell] because it makes sense all round maybe,” Williams said.
