The Saints inflicted more play-off heartache on Leeds fans that have already suffered more than their fair share last month. Adam Armstrong netted the only goal of the game, inside the first 30 minutes.
It means Leeds have to remain in The Championship for another season while Russell Martin embarks on the Premier League for the first time as a manager, and the Saints boss has already made two signings.
Promotion saw a loan for Taylor Harwood-Bellis turn permanent, to the tune of around £20m. Over the weekend, The Saints also struck an emotional deal for 36-year-old veteran Adam Lallana on a free.
Now, they could strike another dagger in Leeds hearts with the Saints said to be targeting a move for an Elland Road favourite. One that played the entire 90 minutes against Southampton in the play-off final.
Southampton eye Leeds favourite with his future uncertain
Leeds are expected to make a number of signings this summer as they bring in replacements for those that look certain to leave. Crysencio Summerville, Willy Gnonto and plenty of others have huge admirers.
For Joe Rodon though, the Tottenham-owned defender’s future is uncertain. The 26-year-old clocked up a huge 50 outings for Leeds during his loan, and had Leeds gone up he would have joined permanently.
But without promotion, his future is in doubt. Leeds remain desperate to sign the £11m man but without Premier League football it seems difficult to both tempt Rodon, and even afford a permanent transfer.
Ipswich have already been linked with the Wales star and now, TeamTalk report that Southampton are considering a move for the former Swansea and Rennes centre-back ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
State of play regarding Rodon after Tottenham strike clause
It is common knowledge now that Tottenham have triggered an extension in Rodon’s contract. Going into the summer it was believed that Rodon ould only have 12 months left on his deal, maybe helping Leeds.
But Spurs have pressed the button on a clause in that contract that takes his Tottenham deal to 2026. It means Tottenham will be able to bring in a full fee for Rodon, rather than a reduced price this summer.
On the other hand, Spurs are able to loan him out but possibly with an obligation. Like Southampton’s deal for Harwood-Bellis and that gives Leeds a chance but Premier League football could take priority.
