Wood, 22, played 26 games for Swansea City last season.

The young defender made 40 appearances in the season before and former Swans boss Martin wants to reunite with Wood at St Mary’s.

Southampton have already made two failed approaches for Wood, but Witcoop says the Saints are confident Martin and Wood will reunite this summer.

The 22-year-old could be set for top division football for the first time in his career.

The England youth international may take some getting used to the demands, but he has potential and Martin knows him better than most.

Southampton will be hoping to survive and then establish themselves back in the Premier League, and this summer window could make or break their next few seasons because as everyone knows, the first year back is always the toughest.
