It may have been sun, sea and Sangria on distant shores for me and my mates 40 years ago, but nowadays, it’s normally just Tynemouth, Toon talk and Taddy’s lager.
Yesterday was no exception and some of the natives are starting to get a little restless with the lack of quality signings arriving before the big kick-off in the EPL on Saturday.
The Marc Guehi deal is dragging on and I personally think that our third reported offer of £55m plus £5m in add-ons is a good-un.
I really would like Guehi to come but it won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t.
The team have looked sharp in pre-season and all eyes are now firmly on our opener against Southampton at St James’ Park.
During the period of time when the Septic Six (Premier League ‘big six’) were doing their utmost to prevent the Newcastle United takeover, they also tried to introduce ‘Project Big Picture’.
Led by the owners of Man U and Liverpool, this would have awarded the Premier League ‘big six’ extra voting rights when it came to future votes on anything important to do with the EPL.
Everton, West Ham United and little Southampton were buttered up to be special cases above the remaining Premier League clubs as other ‘long-term shareholders‘ to try and help get their despicable plan voted through. Basically though, if the Septic Six had succeeded, in the future their collective (much increased!) voting power would have been able to outvote the other 14 EPL clubs. This would have replaced the current safeguards where any major changes need 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs to vote them through, not six!
Liverpool diehard and Chief of the EFL Rick Parry joined with the Septic Six to try and force this through. It rightfully failed and we then had to endure the underhand and embarrassing European Super League fiasco on top of it, the same Premier League ‘big six’ behind that sly plan as well.
Now when the hell have Southampton been a more deserving than a club of Newcastle United’s stature?
I spent time with the Saints as a footballer in my youth but have never really had a soft spot for them. Their North East scout Jack Hixon was a great bloke though and a few years later unearthed Alan Shearer.
I dearly want us to destroy Southampton at the weekend. Getting off to a flyer this season is a must and there is still time in this transfer window to enhance the team.
I’m not sure that Madueke of Chelsea, who we are getting linked to, would significantly improve our first team pool.
I also don’t think Miguel Almiron wants to leave. Is right wing really that much of a big deal when we have Jacob Murphy?
Lets just concentrate on the job in hand and do the business against the Saints (I wouldn’t go as far as calling them sinners).
So it’s over to Eddie and the Hotrods. Lets put this jumped up little club from the South Coast firmly in their place.
If so, I’d be ower the moon as I go marching in to Tynemouth Club on Sunday morning.
