Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested even more punishment could come if the Foxes are relegated from the Premier League next season.
Leicester were charged with a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in March, months before they were promoted from the Championship as champions.
As per the Daily Mai (6 June), their case could drag on beyond the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
It is claimed the delay stems from the “urgent legal proceedings” launched by Leicester against the Premier League and EFL in the wake of the charge.
Leicester ‘not in a great place’ with ‘six-point deduction’ coming, says Wyness
The Midlands club, who reported losses of £89.7million for the 2022-23 campaign, are without a manager in the wake of Enzo Maresca’s departure for Chelsea.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s a very complex case for Leicester because it involves two leagues.
“Also, Leicester’s own attack – suing both the Premier League and EFL – has meant things have become even more complex.
“They’re certainly not going to benefit from a two-point reduction for co-operation.
“All the cases coming together, there’s no doubt that there will be a points deduction for them – I believe.
“It could be six, it could be even more.
“There won’t be any allowances for good behaviour.
“It’s a multi-layered case and another mess. Leicester, meanwhile, will benefit from fighting this case while in the Premier League.
“But they better start performing out of the blocks, because they’ll have at least a six-point deduction coming – and if they go down, then they may face even more punishment in the EFL.
“It’s not a great place for them, they’ve still got problems with PSR. Building a successful squad is going to be pretty tricky for them.”
